Boat Trailers Annapolis
Boat trailers in and around Annapolis , Md are a very large part of our business. We work on all types of boat trailers from small jet ski trailers to large ocean fishing boats and even large sailboats. As boat trailer owners and boat trailer mechanics, we have seen it all. From broken axles to broken frames to broken couplers to trailers broken in half. Here are some of the things we encounter. Let's start from the front.
Boat Trailer Couplers and Actuators
Boat trailer couplers come in all shapes and sizes. The most common couplers for small trailers are 1 7/8 inch ball size or 2 inch ball size and are bolted or welded to the frame of the trailer. These couplers are made for trailers with weights not to exceed 3000 lbs in the state of Md. As the weights of the trailers increase so do the size and configuration of boat trailer couplers .In the state of Maryland, any trailer with a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of over 3000 lbs must have trailer brakes. Boat trailer couplers that incorporate hydraulic surge brakes are called Actuators. Actuators are normally found in 2 inch ball sizes and 2 5/16 ball sizes. Actuators are the brain of a boat trailers hydraulic braking system. Inside the Actuator you will find the master cylinder, and compression dampeners .When towing, the actuator is compressed by the "surge" of the boats weight moving forward as the tow vehicle brakes or decelerates. This "surge" causes pressure against the pushrod that is hooked to the master cylinder and pushes brake fluid threw the master cylinder down the brake lines and to the brakes. As the tow vehicle pulls forward again, the actuator releases pressure on the master cylinder and releases the brakes. Sounds simple doesn't it? Not always.
Boat Trailer Coupler and Actuator problems !!!
The most common problems we see with small boat trailer couplers are bending and rust. If any coupler is bent in any way, it should be replaced immediately. Couplers that are rusted and not lubricated can stick and cause rough turning, or problems getting the coupler to properly seat on the ball or release from the ball. Lubrication can be done with a simple spay lithium grease found at your local auto store .You should lubricate the latching mechanism and the ball socket. Check for any cracks or splits in the coupler that may indicate fatigued metal. Any cracks or splits in the coupler warrants replacement.
Actuators have a few more parts to worry about than standard couplers, but the same attention should be paid to anything bent, rusted, cracked or split metal. In addition careful attention should be paid to the master cylinder. Master cylinders are the single biggest problems with actuators, if the brake system gets opened by a leak or a broken line, things will start to rust. Brake fluid by its nature will draw moisture to it and start the rusting process. Brake fluid levels should be checked on regular bases .To do so, first remove the master cylinder fill cap and inspect the inside. Things should look shiny and the brake fluid clean. If the reservoir is empty, dark brown or rusty than your brakes DO NOT WORK and need to be looked at. At this point you're Actuator or at least master cylinder will need to be replaced.
Newer brake systems are coming out for boat trailers that use different kinds of actuators. The most common brake system for boat trailers is the hydraulic drum brakes, next followed by the hydraulic disc brakes and then the electric over hydraulic drum or disc brakes.
